Prepositions of Place

in front of devant The car is in front of the house. La voiture est devant la maison.
behind derrière The cat is behind the chair. Le chat est derrière la chaise.
between entre The coffee shop is between the bank and the post office. Le café est entre la banque et la poste.

Important Points for French Speakers

  • In English, the preposition usually comes before the object.

  • You need a full structure: Subject + verb + preposition + object.

The dog is behind the door.
(Le chien est derrière la porte.)

  • Teacher places an object (pen, cup) somewhere.

  • Students guess:
    “The pen is ___ the chair.”

(Students answer: on / under / next to…)
